Latin America

In Latin America, a gap wider than in any other part of the world lies between the great wealth of a few privileged individuals and the extreme poverty of the overwhelming majority. Although democracy has now been achieved in nearly all these countries, there are still inadequacies in the distribution of power and in legal certainty. Nor is there a pronounced sense of democracy among the population. But successful modernisation of the state and society depends, among other things, on the extent to which citizens can participate in the process.

The key activity areas of CIM in Latin America are:

  • environmental protection and conservation of natural resources, energy, water and waste management
  • democracy, public administration, civil society, peacekeeping
  • food security, agriculture, rural development.
