In most south and east Asian countries, a growing economy has led to unparalleled prosperity in recent years. Nevertheless, because of high population growth, poverty has remained a core problem in the region. Asia faces two further challenges: achieving greater participation of the civil society in political decision-making and advancing the democratisation and decentralisation processes.

The most important CIM activity areas in Asia are:

  • economic promotion, development of the market system, vocational training
  • environmental protection and conservation of natural resources, energy, water and waste management
  • democracy, public administration, civil society, peacekeeping.
