The Arab and Islamic countries of North Africa and the Near East are experiencing considerable social tension in the course of modernisation. The Euro-Mediterranean Free Trade Zone planned for 2010 is spurring the Mediterranean coastal countries to press ahead with economic, social and political reform processes. For the region’s fast-growing population with its high proportion of unemployed youth, this opens up solid prospects for the future.
